Trout Creek Campground is a fun, family campground situated along the South Santiam River, 20 miles east of the town of Sweet Home, Oregon. Many of the 24 sites are right on the river, tucked under the cool shade of Douglas-fir and Hemlock trees. The campground was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s and includes a welcoming day use shelter with a fireplace and five pull-through RV parking loops and a mix of standard parking spurs. Drinking water is from a hand pump well. Parking spurs are gravel and roads are paved. Firewood is available for a fee.

Wading and fishing are popular in the river and hikers enjoy easy access to the 2.8-mile Trout Creek Trail and the short Walton Ranch Interpretive Trail.

The Menagerie Wilderness can be accessed from the Trout Creek Trail, so hikers and backpackers can explore the area's extensive system of trails. Rooster Rock Trail is just across the road. This 3.3 (one-way) mile trail provides access to Rooster Rock, a stone pinnacle in the Menagerie Wilderness popular among rock climbers (rated 5.4). Additional nearby pinnacles are rated up to 5.9.

Visit the old Santiam Wagon Road, a historic trail used to transport livestock east across the Cascade Mountains to central Oregon's grasslands.

The elevation is 1,200 ft. The campground's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) origin can be seen in its snug campsites tucked into the heavily wooded landscape. Lichen and moss-draped alder, maple and Douglas fir give the campground a semi-sub- tropical look and provide the campground with ample shade and character. Fern and other shrubs provide good privacy. Stretching along the South Santiam River, several sites are near the water's edge. Firewood and some recreational equipment, for such activities as ping-pong, badminton, etc., are available for a fee. Daytrips: Exploring Menagerie Wilderness; Oregon Blue Grass Jamborre in Sweet Home during August; Ranger-led "Heritage Hikes" during the months of July and August (registration required); and, Santiam Wagon Road.

Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable weather and fullest range of activities — expect dry, warm days ideal for river recreation and hiking (daytime highs roughly 65–80°F, nights in the 40s–50s). The South Santiam runs lower and clearer in summer, making fishing for trout and riverside relaxing the highlight, while trails and viewpoints through old-growth Douglas fir and maples are at their most accessible. Weekends can be moderately busy, so midweek visits or a reservation are best for a quieter stay Peak months: July, August, September, June Avoid: October, November, December, January
Dryest, warmest season (65–80°F); river lower and clearer—ideal for fishing and wading.
