Riverford Campground sits at the confluence of the Clackamas and Collawash Rivers in Mt. Hood National Forest, about 1,624 feet above sea level. The campground has eight sites tucked into dense Douglas fir and hemlock forest, three of which sit near the creek. Fees run $19-21 per night. No potable water on-site.
Riverford Campground offers a basic camping experience with eight first-come, first-serve sites. Options cater to both tent and RV campers. Some sites are drive-in accessible, while others require walking down to reach.
Weather and SeasonsSummer is the best time to visit. Daytime highs reach the mid-70s to mid-80s, nights stay cool, and rain is rare. The rivers are accessible for swimming and floating, and trails stay clear. All eight sites fill quickly on summer weekends. Spring and fall bring temperatures in the 40s to 60s, good for hiking but chilly for water activities. Winter snow and freezing temps close the campground for most users.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Clackamas River, designated Wild and Scenic, meets the Collawash River here in a gorge carved through ancient lava flows. Douglas firs and hemlocks dominate the canopy. The converging rivers create deep swimming holes where the water meets and upstream from the campground. Forest floor is thick with ferns and moss. This is Western Cascades temperate rainforest, dense and cool even in summer.
Geological RegionNestled at the dramatic confluence where the Wild and Scenic Clackamas River embraces the pristine Collawash River, Riverford sits within a geological wonderland shaped by millennia of volcanic activity and glacial carving. This densely forested valley, dominated by towering Douglas firs and majestic hemlocks, represents the heart of the Western Cascades' temperate rainforest ecosystem. The converging rivers have sculpted deep gorges through ancient lava flows, creating a landscape where water, stone, and forest merge in perfect harmony.
Scenic ViewsMany campsites offer views of the river, and certain sites are located directly by the water. User Jayne Reuterdahl mentions that three of the eight sites are along the creek.
