About This Camping Style

When the Outdoorithm team booked two group sites at Joshua Tree's Indian Cove for 40 people, we learned firsthand what separates a great group campground from a frustrating one: the booking window strategy, the per-site occupancy math, and the difference a real gathering space makes. Group camping is the best way to bring friends, family, or a club together in America's most spectacular settings, and dedicated group campgrounds give you the space and facilities to do it without the headache of coordinating a dozen separate reservations.

Best Time

The ideal season for group camping depends heavily on your destination, but late spring through early fall (May-September) offers the most reliable weather and accessibility across most regions. Mountain campgrounds like Moqui in Arizona and Canyon View in California's Sierra Nevada are typically accessible from late May through September, with July and August bringing warm days perfect for hiking and water activities, though afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Southwest.

What Makes It Great

  • Sites for 10-100+ people

Tips & Recommendations

  • 1Popular group sites like Canyon View and Moqui book out the moment their window opens, often 6 to 12 months ahead, and the most competitive sites sell out in minutes.
  • 2When we booked Indian Cove's two group sites for 40 people, the difference between getting them and missing out came down to being logged in the second the window opened.
  • 3Designate one trip coordinator to hold the reservation, collect fees, and share the rules before arrival.
  • 4Build a shared packing list and assign meals so you don't end up with six camp stoves and no coffee; potluck-style dinners scale well for big groups.

How to Book These Campgrounds

The most popular campgrounds for group campgrounds book up months in advance. Here are the tools to help you get a site.

Group Campgrounds FAQ

Most dedicated group sites accommodate 10 to 50 people, though capacity varies widely. Some hold as few as 7; others, like the group sites at Joshua Tree's Indian Cove, can host 40+ across a single reservation. Always check the per-site occupancy limit before you book — it caps both people and vehicles.

Book as early as the reservation window opens — typically 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov and ReserveCalifornia, and up to 12 months for some sites. Popular group sites for summer weekends and holidays sell out within minutes of the window opening. If your dates are taken, set a free availability alert to catch cancellations.

Group sites are priced per site, not per person, which makes them a strong value for large parties. Expect roughly $75 to $300 per night depending on capacity and amenities. Splitting one group-site fee across 20-40 people often works out to just a few dollars each.

Group sites are built for gathering: expect multiple picnic tables, several fire rings or large grills, a shared pavilion or open gathering area, and parking for multiple vehicles. Developed sites add flush toilets, showers, and sometimes electrical hookups; primitive group sites may have only vault toilets and hand-pump water.
