About This Camping Style

Primitive camping (also called dispersed or boondocking) means camping outside developed campgrounds—usually on BLM or National Forest land. It's free, uncrowded, and as remote as you want. The tradeoff: no amenities. Bring all your water, pack out all trash, and be fully self-sufficient.

Best Time

Spring and fall avoid crowds and extreme temps. BLM land allows 14-day stays. Check fire restrictions - summer bans are common in the West.

What Makes It Great

  • No reservations needed at many sites
  • Back-to-basics outdoor experience
  • Minimal to no amenities
  • Often free or low-cost

Tips & Recommendations

  • 1Successful primitive camping requires thorough preparation and self-sufficiency since help and supplies are rarely nearby.
  • 2Bring significantly more water than you think you'll need—at least one gallon per person per day for drinking and cooking, plus extra for washing and emergencies, as most primitive sites lack potable water sources.
  • 3Pack a comprehensive first aid kit, extra batteries and headlamps, fire-starting materials including waterproof matches, and a detailed paper map since GPS and cell service often fail in remote areas.
  • 4Check current conditions and road access before departure, as primitive campground roads may become impassable after rain or snow, and confirm whether your vehicle has adequate clearance for rough forest roads.
