Shipwreck Creek Campground opened in 2022 on a forested hill above Lake Superior, inland from Highway 61 in Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The new facility features updated shower buildings, paved bike trails, and electrical hookups at every site. Reviewers consistently rate it 4.6/5 for cleanliness and spacious, quiet sites, though there's no dump station and you'll walk to shared water spigots.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the most reliable conditions along the North Shore: daytime highs around 60–75°F with cool lake breezes, nights in the 40s–50s. Even midsummer can turn cold, windy, and rainy when Lake Superior weather moves in, so pack layers. July through early August and holiday weekends draw the biggest crowds. Long daylight and mild temperatures make summer ideal for hiking the rocky hilltop trails and evening campfires without mud or snow.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground sits on bedrock and rock outcroppings, with many sites cut directly into the stone for natural separation. Mixed North Woods vegetation and new native plantings screen the sites, but trees are still young. Most spots get full or partial sun rather than deep shade. You won't see Lake Superior or the lighthouse from your campsite; the shower house offers a limited lake glimpse. For big-water views and the famous cliff-top lighthouse, drive or bike down to the main park overlooks and shoreline trails a short distance away.
