Canoe-and-fish campers who pack light and bring a water filter will get the most out of this. Walleye, northern pike, and bluegill are all in the lake, the carry-down launch has gentle steps, and the whole setup costs nothing.

Sand Lake Rustic Campground, Kawishiwi Ranger District, Superior National Forest
Canoe-and-fish campers who pack light and bring a water filter will get the most out of this. Walleye, northern pike, and bluegill are all in the lake, the carry-down launch has gentle steps, and the whole setup costs nothing.
First-come-first-served with only two sites means arriving uncertain of a spot. Add no potable water, no trash facilities, horse flies thick enough to drive people out in July, and this frustrates anyone expecting even basic amenities.

Sand Lake Rustic Campground is a small two site campground in a grove of cedar on the shore of Sand Lake. The sites are immediately adjacent to the turn around at the end of the road and share a carry down canoe access to the lake. The road leading to the campsites is in part a two track low maintenance road, but is flat and easily driven. However, due to this portion of the road and the limited turning space at the end of the road, this camping area is not recommended for RV use.

Note that while this campground is in the Kawishiwi District, it is closer to the Isabella Work Station office. Both the Kawishiwi and Isabella offices should be used as sources for further information.

Summer brings mid-60s to mid-70s °F days and mid-40s to mid-50s °F nights, ideal for paddling, fishing, and lingering by the fire ring. Mosquitoes are present, and reviews consistently warn about horse flies during summer months. Prepare accordingly. The season runs May 10 through October 1. Autumn offers cooler air and fewer insects as the forest shifts to gold and crimson, though water recreation becomes less appealing as temperatures drop.
Fall offers fewer insects and cooler temps; scenic lakeside setting remains attractive.
Sand Lake Rustic Campground is a small, two-site facility located in a grove of cedar trees on the shores of Sand Lake in Superior National Forest. The campground offers a rustic experience with minimal amenities, and is particularly suited for tent campers and small vehicles, as the road leading to the site is narrow and turning space is limited. Amenities include fire rings and picnic tables at each site, and a shared accessible vault toilet. However, there are no flush toilets, potable water, or trash facilities on-site. Campers are advised to treat lake water before use and to pack out all trash, including fish remains. Noise limits are enforced to ensure a peaceful environment.
