Arrow Rock State Historic Site Campground sits on wooded bluffs above the Missouri River, offering 45 mostly electric sites beneath a canopy of oak and maple. The campground is a short walk from Arrow Rock's preserved 19th-century village, where museums, the J. Huston Tavern, and historic tours bring frontier Missouri to life. One rare full-hookup site occasionally becomes available; otherwise, plan to use the central water fill and dump station.
A wooded loop with paved, level sites suitable for RVs and tents and a separate primitive/overflow area.
Historical Significance
The campground is part of the historic 19th-century river town of Arrow Rock in Boone's Lick Country. Surviving buildings include the J. Huston Tavern, the Old Courthouse, and the George Caleb Bingham house. The visitor center offers exhibits and audiovisual presentations interpreting local and regional history.Weather and SeasonsFall offers the best combination of comfortable weather, peak color, and easy access to the historic village. Expect daytime highs in the 55–75°F range and crisp nights in the 40s from September through October. Trails and Big Soldier Lake are ideal for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing while maples and oaks turn brilliant shades, and historic tours feel most atmospheric. Crowd levels are moderate: busy on festival weekends but generally quieter on weekdays. Summer brings deep shade, open theater performances, and more village activity, but warmer temperatures and larger crowds. Water at sites and the dump station may shut off in late fall, leaving only electric hookups; the campground closes for winter.
Natural Features and SceneryMature oaks and maples shade mowed clearings throughout the campground loop at 725 feet elevation. Big Soldier Lake sits next to the camping area, stocked with bass and rimmed by trails. Hiking paths wind through wooded ravines past springs and streams before climbing to dramatic bluffs with sweeping views of the Missouri River below. The scenery shifts from intimate forest groves to open lake views to wide river vistas. Nights are dark and quiet except for wildlife sounds, making stargazing easy from the more open primitive sites.
