The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. Swimming beaches and walking and biking trails beckon today's visitors.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of mild weather, fewer crowds, and peak wildlife activity — think cool, crisp days (highs generally 55–70°F in September and 45–60°F by October) and calm, clear evenings ideal for deck dining. Migratory birds, late-season whale sightings, and quieter beaches after Labor Day make hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives especially rewarding. Crowds thin dramatically compared with July/August, so you get the full Outer Cape experience with easier access to Wellf Peak months: September, October, June, July Avoid: November, December, January, February
Described as the best season: calm evenings, fewer crowds, praised by reviewers for fall stays.
