Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of mild weather, thinner crowds, and excellent wildlife viewing — expect daytime highs roughly 55–70°F with cool, breezy mornings and crisp evenings. Migratory birds pass through and salt-marsh life is active, making hiking, wildlife watching, and quiet beach walks especially rewarding; boating and kayaking are pleasant with calmer summer-warmed waters. Crowd levels drop after Labor Day and facilities remain open through mid‑October, so you get the island’s full, Peak months: September, October, May, June Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall described as best window: cooler temps, fewer bugs, thin crowds and migratory birds.
The Watch Hill Family Campground offers basic camping amenities with access to nearby marina facilities. However, there are consistent user complaints about the lack of maintenance in shower and bathroom facilities. According to one review, 'The shower/restrooms could definitely use some repair and upkeep. Don’t mind cold showers, but fix nozzles that don’t work (several) and change a light bulb.'
