Version 1.0, effective September 24, 2026. These terms govern use of Outdoorithm Data obtained through outdoorithm.com, the Outdoorithm mobile apps, the Outdoorithm API, the Outdoorithm MCP server, and Outdoorithm webhooks. They supplement our Terms of Service; if you have an Outdoorithm account, the Terms of Service also apply. "Outdoorithm", "we", and "us" mean Outdoorithm LLC.
The short version
You can use Outdoorithm's campground data freely to plan and book your own trips, including through AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT, which is what we built our public MCP server for. With a subscription, you can automate your own account through the API. What you can't do without a written licence: republish the data, build it into your own product or database, watch availability or send alerts for other people, or use it to train AI models. When you show Outdoorithm data to other people, say it came from Outdoorithm. This summary is for convenience; the sections below govern.
1. What these terms cover
"Outdoorithm Data" means the data, results, scores, summaries, and other content Outdoorithm serves through its website, apps, API, MCP server, and webhooks. It includes our compilation of campground and campsite information across reservation systems; our enrichment of it, such as review summaries, sentiment analysis, Report Card grades, Greenbook community safety scores and flags, terrain and scenery classification, booking-window intelligence, and gear recommendations; availability results and alert events; weather-suitability ratings; drive-time results; and responses generated by Camp Sage and our other AI features.
Some underlying facts in Outdoorithm Data originate in public records and operator systems, such as Recreation.gov, state and county park reservation systems, and the U.S. Forest Service. Outdoorithm claims no ownership of those underlying records themselves. Our rights are in our selection, arrangement, enrichment, and derived works, and in the services that deliver them.
Some Outdoorithm Data incorporates third-party data under its own terms. Weather data comes from Open-Meteo under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Geocoding and drive times come from Mapbox. Where you display that data, its own attribution and use requirements apply in addition to these terms (Section 7).
2. How you agree to these terms
You agree to these terms by creating an Outdoorithm account or API key, by authenticating to the Outdoorithm API, by connecting to the Outdoorithm MCP server, or by otherwise accessing Outdoorithm Data through an interface we provide, whether or not you have an account. If you are using Outdoorithm Data on behalf of a company or other organization, you agree on its behalf and represent that you have authority to do so, and "you" means both you and that organization. If you operate an AI agent, client, connector, or other tool that accesses Outdoorithm Data for other people, these terms bind both you and each person on whose behalf a request is made, and you are responsible for making sure those people know that. When you create an API key, we record the version of these terms you accepted and when.
If you do not agree, do not access Outdoorithm Data.
3. Your licence
Outdoorithm grants you a limited, non-exclusive, revocable, non-sublicensable, non-transferable licence to access Outdoorithm Data through the interfaces Outdoorithm provides, for the Permitted Uses in Section 4. All rights not expressly granted are reserved. This licence does not transfer ownership of anything.
4. Permitted uses: free, no permission needed
- Planning and booking your own trips. Searching, comparing, and evaluating campgrounds, checking availability, and preparing to reserve, for trips you and your household or group will take.
- Automating your own account. With an active subscription, using the Outdoorithm API through keys issued to your own account to do the things you could do yourself in the Outdoorithm app: search, check availability, and create and manage your own alerts, within your plan's limits.
- AI assistants, expressly welcome. Using Outdoorithm Data as input to an AI assistant or agent acting on your behalf, including retrieval, grounding, and generating answers to your questions in tools like Claude and ChatGPT. Our public MCP server exists for exactly this. You may keep and reuse the responses you legitimately receive.
- Research, journalism, and commentary. Citing, quoting, and analyzing insubstantial excerpts of Outdoorithm Data with attribution (Section 7).
- Linking. Linking to any page on outdoorithm.com.
5. Uses that require a written licence
Contact us (Section 15) before doing any of the following. Each requires a written licence with Outdoorithm, and Section 6 applies to every licence we grant.
- Redistribution. Republishing or distributing Outdoorithm Data, in whole or in part, on a stand-alone basis, as a dataset, feed, file, or lookup service.
- Embedding in a product or service. Displaying or delivering Outdoorithm Data to your own customers, members, or users through your product, platform, website, app, or service. This includes operating an AI agent or assistant as a service for other people's use where it draws on Outdoorithm Data.
- Watching availability or sending alerts for other people. Monitoring campsite availability on behalf of anyone other than yourself, or delivering availability notifications, in any form, to your own users. Hosted alerts for a partner's users are a licensed product with their own pricing; the free permissions above never cover them.
- Resale or sublicensing. Selling access to Outdoorithm Data or to Outdoorithm's services, or granting others rights in them.
- Bulk or systematic extraction. Harvesting Outdoorithm Data at volume, walking through identifiers or search results to assemble a copy, systematically querying every campground in a region or state, or using Outdoorithm Data to build, populate, or improve any database, directory, search index, or similar collection. Permitted use is retrieval of individual results responsive to genuine, contemporaneous requests, not enumeration of the catalog. A "substantial portion" of Outdoorithm Data means any set of it that could be marketed or used independently, whatever its size relative to the whole.
- Building a substitute. Using Outdoorithm Data to build, benchmark, or improve a product, service, or dataset that competes with or substitutes for Outdoorithm Data or the Outdoorithm services.
- AI model training and indexing. Using Outdoorithm Data to train, fine-tune, distill, or improve any AI model, or to build embeddings, vector stores, or retrieval indexes. This does not restrict the real-time assistant uses permitted in Section 4, nor a private index limited to responses you legitimately received through your own permitted use, maintained for your own or your household's use. This paragraph survives any termination of your access or of these terms.
6. Terms that apply to every commercial licence
A commercial licence is a written agreement with Outdoorithm: an order form, a signed agreement, or a licence we confirm in writing by email. Current tiers and prices are published at outdoorithm.com/developers. Unless the written licence says otherwise, the following apply to every licence.
- Scope. A licence covers the endpoints, tools, reservation providers, and volumes it names. A campground outside your licensed providers is not licensed to you, and adding a provider or capability requires our written confirmation. A new class of data enters a licence only after Outdoorithm confirms it holds the rights to redistribute it, and Outdoorithm may remove a provider or data class from a licence on 30 days' notice, or immediately where an upstream source requires it.
- Your users. You may make Outdoorithm Data available only to your own users, through the surface your licence names, under terms of service that bind your users to restrictions at least as protective of Outdoorithm Data as Sections 5, 7, and 8. You are responsible for your users' compliance, for your relationship with them, and for every notice, consent, and opt-out that the law requires for the messages you send them. Outdoorithm does not receive your users' contact details through hosted alerts and is not a party to your relationship with them.
- Keys. API keys and webhook secrets are confidential. Keep them server-side, never in client code or public repositories, rotate them on our request, and tell us promptly if one is exposed. Everything done with your keys is your responsibility.
- Caching. You may cache Outdoorithm Data only to serve the same user the same result: campground and catalog data for up to 24 hours, and availability results for no more than 15 minutes, displayed with the time they were fetched. Drive-time and routing results must not be stored at all beyond the request that produced them; our routing provider's terms forbid it. You may keep campground identifiers, names, and links indefinitely to represent a user's saved or watched campgrounds. Any other persistent store of Outdoorithm Data, and any cross-user cache, requires written permission.
- No automated reservations. You must not use Outdoorithm Data or services to automate reservations, cart holds, or checkout on any reservation operator's system, or to reserve on your users' behalf, and you must not present Outdoorithm as booking on anyone's behalf. Outdoorithm hands users to the operator's own site to reserve for themselves; so must you.
- Attribution. Section 7 applies, in the form and prominence your licence specifies.
- Representations about the data. You will not make warranties or claims about Outdoorithm Data to your users beyond what Outdoorithm publishes, and you will not describe Outdoorithm Data as live, guaranteed, or bookable.
- Fees and term. Fees, quotas, and overage are as published or as stated in your licence. Licences are month-to-month for the first three months, then annual, unless the written licence says otherwise.
- Verification. Once per licence year, and once in the twelve months after a licence ends, on 15 business days' written notice, Outdoorithm may verify your compliance with the caching, deletion, and training restrictions above by written questionnaire and, where reasonably necessary, a screen-share of the relevant systems during business hours. This is the only audit right under a licence unless the written licence adds another.
- Ending a licence. When a licence ends, stop calling the API, remove Outdoorithm Data and attribution from your surface, delete cached Outdoorithm Data within 30 days, and certify deletion in writing on request. Records of your users' own saved campgrounds may be kept as identifiers, names, and links only.
- Change of control. Outdoorithm may end a licence on 30 days' notice if you undergo a change of control to a party that offers a campground database, availability-monitoring, or campsite-alert product.
7. Attribution
When Outdoorithm Data is displayed to anyone beyond yourself and your household, in a product, publication, report, presentation, or conversation, the displaying surface must conspicuously include the text "Data from Outdoorithm (outdoorithm.com)" or a substantially equivalent credit, with a working link to outdoorithm.com where links are supported. Licensed integrations display "Powered by Outdoorithm" with a link, in the form and placement their licence specifies. Voice and chat surfaces must identify Outdoorithm as the source in the response itself.
Do not remove or obscure source, provenance, or attribution fields that Outdoorithm includes in its data and API responses. Where you display weather data we obtained from Open-Meteo, include the credit "Weather data by Open-Meteo.com" with a link, as its licence requires. Where you display drive times or maps derived from Mapbox, comply with Mapbox's attribution requirements. Where data originated from Recreation.gov or another government system, do not state or imply that the United States Government, any state, or any park agency endorses you or your product.
These terms do not grant any right to use Outdoorithm's name, logos, or trademarks other than for the attribution described here.
8. Fair access
Outdoorithm sets and enforces access and volume limits at its discretion. Current public limits are described at outdoorithm.com/docs/mcp for the MCP server and outdoorithm.com/docs/api for the API. Do not circumvent or attempt to circumvent limits or access controls, including by rotating IP addresses, keys, sessions, client identifiers, or accounts, or by distributing requests across machines to exceed a limit. Do not share an API key issued to your account with another person, or use someone else's.
If you operate an automated system that calls Outdoorithm, identify it with an honest client identifier, you are responsible for its behavior, including preventing runaway request loops, and you must promptly suspend its access if Outdoorithm asks. Outdoorithm logs usage of its API and MCP server, including client identity, user agent, request patterns, and timing, to enforce these terms, protect the service, and bill licences. Outdoorithm may seed non-material tracer records into Outdoorithm Data to detect unauthorized copying.
9. Availability, alerts, and reservations
An availability result is a snapshot of what a reservation operator's system reported at the moment we checked. Operators' systems change by the second, are sometimes wrong, and are always authoritative. Outdoorithm does not warrant that a site shown as available can be booked, and an alert is a notification that a site appeared available when we looked, not a reservation and not a promise that it will still be there.
Alert monitoring runs on a cadence that varies by reservation system, plan, and load. Outdoorithm may slow, pause, or stop monitoring a system at any time, including to respect an operator's terms or limits.
Outdoorithm never makes reservations on anyone's behalf. You reserve directly with the operator, on its site, under its terms. You must comply with each operator's terms of use, which generally limit reservations to personal use and prohibit reselling or transferring them, and you must not use Outdoorithm Data or services to interfere with, overload, or automate any operator's reservation system. Outdoorithm may stop serving data from any operator or source at any time, including where that source's terms or a request from it require us to.
10. Accuracy and AI-generated content
Outdoorithm Data is provided "as is". It is compiled from sources that lag, contain errors, and omit information. Campground fees, seasons, amenities, and rules change without notice to us.
Some Outdoorithm Data is generated or classified by AI and statistical models. Review summaries, sentiment scores, Report Card grades, Greenbook community safety scores and flags, terrain classifications, weather-suitability ratings, packing lists, gear recommendations, and Camp Sage responses are our interpretation of reviews, public data, and the models' output. They are opinions and estimates, may be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and are not a substitute for official park information, the National Weather Service, or your own judgment. A safety score is not a guarantee of anyone's safety.
Outdoorithm does not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any purpose, and you are responsible for verifying information before relying on it. The Terms of Service contain the full disclaimer and limitation of liability, which apply to Outdoorithm Data.
11. Ownership
As between you and Outdoorithm, Outdoorithm owns Outdoorithm Data as a compilation, its enrichment, scores, summaries, and models, the services that deliver them, and aggregated, de-identified usage telemetry. You own your own queries and the applications you build. Nothing in these terms restricts your use of public records you obtain independently, meaning without accessing, copying, deriving from, or relying on Outdoorithm Data or services; if you assert independent acquisition, you must have kept contemporaneous records sufficient to show the source and produce them on request. Outdoorithm may use feedback you give about its services without obligation.
12. Suspension and termination
Outdoorithm may suspend or terminate free or anonymous access at any time, with or without notice or cause. Outdoorithm may suspend any access immediately where it reasonably believes these terms are being violated, where usage spikes in a way that is abusive or degrades the service for others, where access creates a security or legal risk, where an upstream source requires it, or where account or licence information is inaccurate, and will limit the scope and duration of a suspension to what the situation needs. A written licence ends as it provides. On termination of your access, stop accessing Outdoorithm Data and delete Outdoorithm Data you hold in violation of these terms. The following survive termination: Sections 1, 5 (including the surviving training prohibition), 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14; the verification, deletion, and certification obligations in Section 6 for the periods they state, whether or not you still hold any Outdoorithm Data; the rest of Section 6 for as long as you or your contractors hold any Outdoorithm Data; and any accrued obligations.
You acknowledge that unauthorized extraction, redistribution, or replication of Outdoorithm Data would cause harm that money alone cannot repair, and that Outdoorithm may seek an injunction in addition to any other remedy.
13. Liability and indemnity
The warranty disclaimer and limitation of liability in the Terms of Service apply to Outdoorithm Data and to every interface that delivers it. Outdoorithm's total liability to you arising from Outdoorithm Data, the API, the MCP server, or webhooks will not exceed the greater of the fees you paid Outdoorithm in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim and one hundred U.S. dollars.
If you use Outdoorithm Data in a product, service, or business, or on behalf of anyone other than yourself, you will defend Outdoorithm and its members, managers, employees, and agents against any third-party claim arising from your product or service, from the messages you send your users, from your breach of these terms or your licence, or from your violation of law, and pay resulting damages and costs finally awarded or agreed in settlement. Outdoorithm will give you prompt notice of the claim, control of the defense (though you may not admit fault on our behalf or impose obligations on us without our consent), and reasonable cooperation at your expense.
14. Legal boundaries
Nothing in these terms restricts uses permitted by applicable law, including fair use, or claims rights in underlying public records. A written licence from Outdoorithm governs for the conduct it expressly permits and the commercial terms it states; these terms govern everything else, and conduct a written licence expressly permits is not a breach of Section 5 or of the Terms of Service. If any provision is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
Changes to these terms. The current version is always at this URL with its version number and effective date. A material change follows the notice rule in Section 18 of the Terms of Service: if you hold an Outdoorithm account or API key, we will notify you directly, by email to the address on your account, at least 30 days before the change takes effect, and posting this page is not by itself notice to you. If you access Outdoorithm Data without an account, for example through the public MCP server, we cannot reach you directly, so we will publish the new version here, with its effective date, at least 30 days before it takes effect, and we will note the pending change in the MCP server's discovery documents. No change applies to conduct before its effective date. Continued access after the effective date stated in the notice is acceptance of the new version; if you do not agree, stop accessing Outdoorithm Data before that date. Integrations already operating on the effective date above have until October 24, 2026 to come into compliance or contact us. These terms are governed by the same law and dispute-resolution terms as the Terms of Service.
