The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. Swimming beaches and walking and biking trails beckon today's visitors.
The national seashore is located in eastern Massachusetts on Cape Cod and is accessed via Route 6. The park is 20 miles east of Hyannis, MA.

Best season: summer. Summer offers reliably warm, sun-drenched days (air highs typically 70–80°F) and the warmest ocean swims of the year (ocean temps often 60–68°F by July–August), making this the best time to enjoy Coast Guard Beach, swimming, and full days of biking and hiking the seashore trails. Wildlife viewing is excellent for shorebirds and seals, and all visitor services and nearby attractions are open, though expect peak crowds and book early. Evening cookouts and long daylight hours maximize time outside; Peak months: July, August, June, September Avoid: November, December, January, February
Best season: warm temps, ocean temps 60–68°F and prime swimming/biking/hiking conditions.
