Fall delivers the most balanced conditions. Daytime temperatures range from mid-60s to low-80s°F (18–27°C), with cool nights in the mid-40s to mid-50s°F (7–13°C). Water levels drop and clear after summer, improving paddling and swimming. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, leaving trails and riverbanks quieter through September and October. Fishing and wildlife viewing pick up in fall. Winter brings rain that feeds the river but can complicate primitive camping.
