The narrow, winding access road already filters out big RVs and nervous drivers. Add no showers, no hookups, 20 miles of trails still closed from fire damage, and summer heat regularly cresting 100°F, and most non-spring visits leave people underwhelmed.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Spring brings the most balanced conditions, with daytime highs in the mid-50s to mid-70s°F and cool nights in the 40s-50s°F. Trails look their best as oak woodlands green up and wildflowers peak. Summer afternoons regularly push above 100°F, though mornings stay surprisingly cool. Winter delivers over 50 inches of annual rain, with occasional frost and rare snow flurries dusting the hills.
Spring described as best: mild temps, green oak woodlands and peak wildflowers when trails open.

Bullfrog Pond Campground at Austin Creek SRA offers essential amenities but has a rustic focus. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and food box. Potable water faucets are located along the campground road, and the site features two bathroom facilities with flush toilets and sinks, both described as clean and well-ventilated by user reviewers. No showers are available, and campers should note that firewood is available for purchase at the entrance station. Generators can be used between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. However, the campground imposes a fire ban during periods of extreme fire danger, limiting campfires and BBQs to propane stoves.
