Mouth of Two Hearted River sits where the legendary river empties into Lake Superior, 36 first-come sites on a remote stretch of the Upper Peninsula shoreline. The campground runs rustic: vault toilets, a hand-pump well, picnic tables, and a boat launch. Anglers and paddlers claim it as a favorite U.P. destination, but GPS often fails here and cell service is nonexistent.
Rustic/primitive state forest campground with 36 sites designated for tent and small trailer use; all sites are first-come, first-served with a 15‑day maximum stay.
Weather and SeasonsSummer delivers the sweet spot: daytime highs in the 60s to mid-70s, nights in the 40s and low 50s, and full trail and water access. Fishing and paddling peak from June through August, and the North Country Trail stays walkable. Lake Superior keeps conditions unpredictable even in July. Pack layers and expect sudden wind. Weekends in late summer draw more anglers and paddlers, but this remains a quiet, off-grid camp. Winter access roads stay unplowed.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies sand-and-cobble beach at 623 feet elevation, flanked by jack pine and mixed conifers. A suspension footbridge crosses to the lake side, opening miles of open Superior shoreline for rock hunting and shoreline hiking. The river mouth creates a dynamic meeting of currents and cobble where waves break against ancient stone while the Two-Hearted flows quietly past. Rolling dunes and stands of pine frame the water. Wind off the lake can be relentless at exposed sites near the beach.
