Paddlers using Gunflint as a BWCA entry point, and anglers chasing lake trout or walleye in fall when the crowds thin and the birch turns gold. Free, first-come, no hookups, no potable water, pack everything in.
No potable water on site and Grand Marais is nearly 44 miles away, so anyone who forgets supplies is in real trouble. The isolation also hits hard after dark, which reviewers describe as genuinely unsettling if you're not prepared for it.

Fall brings the best conditions: daytime highs in the 40s to 60s°F, nights dropping into the 20s and 30s. The birch and maple turn gold and crimson, and summer crowds disappear. Fish feed actively before winter. Loon calls echo across calm water. The darkness that makes stargazing spectacular also means you'll need headlamps and extra lighting. Summer offers warmer paddling and swimming temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Winter opens cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes.
Fall called best: colorful foliage, cooler days, fewer crowds and active fishing.
