Context for the broader area surrounding Hurricane River Campground, sourced from the federal Recreation.gov rec-area record.
Sandstone cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, sand dunes, inland lakes, deep forest, and wild shoreline beckon you to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The power of Lake Superior shapes the park's coastal features and affects every ecosystem, creating a unique landscape to explore. Hiking, camping, sightseeing, and four-season outdoor opportunities abound.
Pictured Rocks NL is located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, between the towns of Munising (west) and Grand Marais (east). Best season: fall. Fall offers crisp, clear weather and peak color on the Pictured Rocks sandstone cliffs and shoreline—daytime highs typically range from the mid-40s to low-60s °F (7–16 °C) with chilly nights. Mosquitoes and black flies have mostly died back, trails are quieter than summer, and photographic light and shore winds make hiking, wildlife viewing, and beach walks especially rewarding. Expect lower crowds than July weekends, though weekends in late September can still fill; note the campground closes 1 Peak months: September, October, August, July Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall called prime season: crisp temps, stunning foliage, bugs die back and great solitude.
