Spring (late May through June) hits the sweet spot: daytime highs around 50–70°F, cool nights in the 25–40°F range, fewer crowds than midsummer, and wildflowers at their best. This is prime time for fishing and wildlife photography. Autumn brings gold aspens and reliable weather. Winter opens up snowshoeing and ice fishing once the reservoir freezes. Summer gets crowded and hot at elevation, though water activities are in full swing.

Vega State Park offers a wide array of amenities catering to both recreational and essential needs. The park features facilities like ADA fishing access, biking trails, bird-watching opportunities, a boat launch and ramp, boating activities, camper service buildings, and group pavilions. Campers can utilize centrally located water pumps, comfort stations, and a dump station. Firewood is available on-site, and the park provides fishing, hiking trails, historical sites, and hunting opportunities. Winter activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also available. "Very clean restroom and shower in Early Settlers RV park" and "The shower house was clean and well kept but getting there before the hot water is gone is a game in itself" suggest varied experiences with maintenance and availability of hot water. Cell and Wi-Fi signals are reportedly unavailable in this area.
