Best season: spring. Spring (late May–June) offers the best combination of mild weather, low crowds, and active lake and forest life: expect daytime highs around 55–75°F and cool nights in the 35–50°F range. Boat ramps, fishing (trout and bass are active) and shoreline access are coming into their prime after the campground opens May 16, while trails flood with wildflowers and migrating birds. You'll get easier parking and quieter evenings compared with peak summer weekends, making it ideal for hiking, wildlife-view Peak months: June, May, July, August Avoid: September, October, November, December
Late May–June is the sweet spot: mild temps, wildflowers, active trout/bass and accessible ramps.

Hayward Flat Campground offers essential amenities with a mix of modern and traditional features. The campground consists of 98 units divided into 5 loops, including the Dogwood and Elderberry loops, which provide lake views and informal boat mooring. Each campsite has a paved spur, picnic table, and campfire ring. Many sites are equipped with bear-proof food storage lockers. Additional facilities include flush toilets and potable water access. However, maintenance issues such as unclean restrooms and overflowing trash bins have been frequently reported by visitors. Seasonal amphitheater programs are also offered, providing an educational aspect to the camping experience. "The bathrooms are always a problem and need to be redone so this doesn't happen every year," one user noted.
