Go if

Anglers, stargazers, and anyone who wants genuine quiet: the 25-acre stocked trout lake, dark-sky nights, and dense site privacy deliver at $13-$28/night. Walk-in sites are the most secluded. Fall is peak season for good reason.

Skip if

No potable water on-site means hauling everything in, and the nearest store is over an hour away. Tent pads flood on some sites during heavy rain, there are no showers, and the gravel access road is rough enough to matter.

Fishing is available at Spruce Knob Lake. Built in 1952 for fishing, the 25-acre lake is regularly stocked with trout by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Numerous small but hungry bluegills along the shoreline make fishing fun for beginning anglers. Electric trolling motors and non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake. There is a small boat launch, parking lot, and vault toilets. A wooden pier along the shoreline provides barrier free access.

About the campground

The elevation is 3,920 ft. A single loop campground, one of five in the Spruce Knob/Seneca Rocks National Scenic Area, is on the way to Spruce Knob Mountain, the highest point in West Virginia (4,681feet). The most wilderness-feeling campground in the Scenic Area, sites are nestled in a thick stand of mixed hardwoods that provide ample shade and excellent privacy. To preserve the vegetation, tents are permitted only on tent pads. Campsites have lantern poles and trimmed grass understory. The campground is convenient to outstanding hiking trails. Located in a beautiful mixed hardwood forest near the small Spruce Knob Lake, fishing is also an attraction. The overall atmosphere at the campground is tranquil and secluded. A dozen walk-in campsites provide a semi-wilderness camping experience without the need to backpack. The campground uses solar power for its water system. All water spigots are located on the downhill side of the loop. Firewood is available for a fee. NOTE: This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
