Anyone counting on a guaranteed site will be disappointed, there's no reservation option, no cell signal to troubleshoot payment issues on arrival, and showing up on a fall weekend means real risk of finding nothing available.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best balance of cooler, stable weather and thinner crowds—daytime highs typically sit in the 50s–70s°F (10–24°C) with crisp nights that drop into the 30s–40s°F (0–9°C), making for comfortable sleeping and excellent stargazing. Trails and camp areas are quieter after the summer rush, and the landscape takes on autumn tones while insects decline, so simple general camping and relaxed hikes are at their peak. Expect fewer neighbors on weekdays and early mornings are the best time to Peak months: September, October, August, June
