Anyone counting on a guaranteed site will have a problem, since there's no reservation option whatsoever. Driving 8.5 miles out Highway 970 only to find the campground full is a real outcome on fall weekends.

Best season: fall. Fall offers the best combination of mild days, cool nights, and lower crowds—expect daytime highs typically in the 50s–70s°F (10–25°C) with crisp nights dropping into the 30s–40s°F (0–8°C). Trails and roads are usually clear after summer’s wildfire smoke risk fades, making hiking, photography and stargazing ideal; as a first-come campground you’ll also find more open sites on weekdays. Keep in mind that big-game hunting seasons run in parts of the region in fall, so wear bright colors and check, Peak months: September, October, August, July Avoid: December, January, February
