Go if

Rockhounders and wilderness hikers who run a high-clearance 4WD truck and pack all their own water. The Wildcat South Trailhead is steps away, the ponderosa canopy is genuine, and with only two sites you'll likely have the place to yourself on a weeknight.

Skip if

Cars, low-clearance SUVs, and anyone expecting water at the spigot will have a bad time. Reviews consistently flag the final approach as rough enough to warrant recovery gear, and the toilet misuse problem means the one convenience here isn't always usable.
