Spring offers the most dramatic payoff at Cold Springs — wildflower displays across the upland meadows and quaking aspen colonies are at their peak, and temperatures are cool and comfortable for day hikes (roughly 50–70°F daytime, 30–40°F nights). Trails and wildlife are active after snowmelt, making spring ideal for hiking, birding, fishing in refreshed streams, and photography with few of the summer crowds. Expect increasing visitation by late May and holiday weekends, but overall crowds are a Peak months: June, May, September, July Avoid: November, December, January, February

The Cold Springs Guard Station offers a unique mix of historical charm and modern amenities, making it an appealing choice for campers looking to combine comfort with the rustic beauty of the Ochoco National Forest. The cabin is equipped with two bathrooms (one with a tub and shower), flush toilets, a propane cook stove, and a solar-powered refrigerator. It is stocked with basic kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies. The cabin also features three bedrooms, a living room, and solar-powered lights. Drinking water is available indoors, and there is a picnic table and fire ring outside for dining or campfires. Visitors should bring their own garbage bags as this is a pack-it-in/pack-it-out facility. Additionally, the nearest town for supplies is 45 minutes away.
