No potable water on site is a dealbreaker, or you're expecting shade, because the 2021 Cub Creek fire opened the canopy and most sites now sit in full sun with recovering scrub instead of forest cover.

Spring is the best bet once the Forest Service reopens the campground. Wildflowers bloom across the recovering burn areas, the creek runs high from snowmelt, and daytime temperatures sit between 50-70°F. Nights drop into the 30s and 40s. Trails can be muddy from melt. Crowds are lighter than summer weekends. Summer hits around 80°F with clear skies, good for creek access but expect more visitors. Mosquitoes are a consistent complaint, so plan accordingly.
Spring called the best time once reopened: wildflowers, high creek flows, pleasant temps (50–70°F).
