West Wall Campground is a small primitive camping area on Middle Bass Island, part of Ohio's Lake Erie archipelago. The campground sits on the southeast side of the island near the state park marina, just a short walk from the ferry dock. Finding it can be tricky. Signage is nonexistent and even locals sometimes give wrong directions. But it's open and operational despite rumors to the contrary. When you disembark the ferry, turn right and walk toward the main dock; the campground is to the right of the dock.
Weather and SeasonsThe campground is open roughly May 1 through October 15, aligned with the ferry and boating season. Summer is the most reliable window: daytime highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s°F, cool evenings in the 60s, and warm enough lake water for swimming. Marina access, fishing, and island services are all at their peak then, though crowds pick up compared to spring and fall (though still modest by mainland park standards). Late spring and early fall offer quieter visits and cooler temperatures, but Lake Erie weather becomes less predictable and wind more variable. Outside the posted season the campground is closed.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies open, grassy shoreline with scattered trees along Lake Erie's edge. Most sites are exposed, offering unobstructed views of the lake and marina basin. South Bass Island (home to Put-in-Bay) is visible across the water. Sunrises and sunsets color the lake and sky, and the steady breeze off the water means you'll hear waves and see sailboats passing the harbor. The setting is simple: grass clearings, partial water views, and a lot of sky. This is island camping stripped of frills, defined by wind, water, and the isolation that comes with being accessible only by ferry or private boat.
