Bass Lake State Forest Campground sits on the eastern shore of Bass Lake in Michigan's central Upper Peninsula, about 20 minutes from Gwinn. The 22-site campground operates first-come, first-served and attracts anglers, paddlers, and campers comfortable with rustic facilities. Mature hardwoods and conifers shade most sites, and several have direct lake access.
Rustic, single-loop lakeside campground accommodating tents and trailers; first-come, first-served.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the warmest and most reliable conditions. Daytime highs in the mid-60s to upper 70s°F, nights in the 40s to 50s. Swimming, paddling, and fishing peak from late June through August. Weekends in July see moderate crowds; weekdays stay quiet. The road and loop aren't plowed in winter, so snow season requires a ski-in or snowshoe approach. Spring and fall offer solitude and cooler temps, though lake activities drop off as water chills.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground loop winds through dense mixed forest at 1,237 feet elevation, with a canopy of hardwoods and conifers providing shade and natural screening between sites. Several sites sit directly on the water or connect to the shoreline via short woodland trails. A grassy picnic area at the lake edge holds two tables and catches morning sun. The boat launch gives paddlers and small-boat anglers access to Bass Lake, which supports fishing and swimming through summer. Expect forest shade to keep sites comfortable even on warm July days.
