No potable water on-site, and summer can dry out the nearby source entirely, anyone who forgets to filter and carry their own will be in trouble fast. The privy being a long walk from camp is a real annoyance at night.

Fall delivers the best conditions. Peak foliage colors the forest from late September through October, with daytime highs in the 40s–60s°F and nights dropping into the 30s–40s°F. Trails are clear, ridgeline views are sharp, and the 1.2-mile approach stays comfortable in the cooler temps. Popular weekends draw moderate crowds, but the backcountry location keeps the feel peaceful. Winter temps average around 20°F. Summer warms to the mid-70s but brings the risk of dry water sources.
Fall described as best: peak foliage late Sept–Oct with mild days and cool nights.
The Velvet Rocks Shelter is a dispersed camping site located in the White Mountain National Forest. While there are no amenities such as restrooms, flush toilets, potable water, or picnic tables explicitly provided, the shelter itself is noted for providing relief during inclement weather.
