Summer visits with thin-skinned bugs-hate-me campers: multiple reviewers call the mosquitoes massive and relentless during warmer months. No showers, no hookups, no cell service, and no reservations mean it may not suit those who need to plan far ahead.

Fall, particularly September, offers the best overall experience. Expect crisp days in the 40–60°F range and chilly nights dropping to 20–35°F. Lodgepole pines and surrounding vegetation show late-season color, trout feed actively in the cooling water, and deer and elk move to lower elevations, making wildlife viewing excellent. Crowds thin dramatically compared to summer. Fishing and boating feel especially peaceful with fewer campers around. Come prepared for cold nights even in early fall. Freezing temperatures are common.
