Group Campground sits in Zippel Bay State Park on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, about four miles from Warroad. The park centers on a wide sandy beach and birch-shaded trails. Evening naturalist programs and lakeside campfires extend the day beyond sunset.
Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the best conditions, with daytime highs around 70–80°F and nights in the 50s–60s. The beach is warm enough for swimming from late June through August. Late August balances warm beach weather with fewer mosquitoes, though some biting flies remain. Early summer means heavy mosquitoes and dense biting flies in the birch woods. Long daylight hours make July ideal for extended evenings around the fire. Midweek visits are quieter than weekends in July and early August.
Natural Features and SceneryDense birch forests cover most of the park, their white trunks glowing in twilight. The beach stretches along Lake of the Woods with fine sand that resembles Gulf Coast beaches rather than typical northern Minnesota rock. Grassy sites sit among wild birch groves. At 1,125 feet elevation, the terrain is mostly level. Wildlife moves through regularly. Some campers have spotted large cat prints near the beach and heard screeching calls at night.
