Heavy bug seasons (peak summer) bring severe mosquitoes and black flies that repellent alone won't handle. No pets allowed, no hookups, and the narrow access roads make large RVs a real gamble.

Summer brings daytime highs of 65–80°F and cool nights in the 45–60°F range, the warmest window for boating, swimming, and ranger-led programs. It's also peak mosquito and black fly season. Campers report severe biting insects even with repellent; a hooded jacket helps. The campground operates seasonally, with opening and closing dates shifting based on spring thaws and fall frosts. Check the park's webpage before planning a trip, as weather determines when the gates open each year.
Cooler weather, fewer insects and scenic boardwalk hikes likely improve the experience.
