Cass Lake Campground Loop sits on the southern shore of Cass Lake in Chippewa National Forest's Norway Beach Recreation Area. The 22-site campground includes 12 walk-in tent sites with large tent pads, accessible via a walking and biking trail. Sites cost $14-$21 per night. The campground offers flush toilets, showers, and a sandy beach with direct lake access.
Cass Lake Loop caters to tent camping within a walk-in accessible setup and does not support RV camping or other forms of accommodations.
The Norway Beach Visitor Center was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Exhibits inside cover the heritage of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples and the area's native plants and animals. Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the best conditions, with daytime highs around 70-80°F and cool nights in the mid-40s to mid-50s. This is peak season for swimming, boating, and fishing for walleye and pike. Wildflowers bloom and daylight stretches long. July and early August draw the biggest crowds, so book walk-in sites early or visit in early June or late August for quieter stays. The campground sees visitors in shoulder seasons too, though facilities may not all be open.
ElevationPerched at 1,300 feet above sea level, Cass Lake Loop offers a refreshing escape from summer's heat. This gentle elevation creates a unique microclimate where morning mists dance across the water and evening breezes carry the sweet scent of pine. As the sun sets behind the treeline, the elevation brings a pleasant coolness that makes for perfect sleeping weather—nature's own air conditioning that ensures restful nights after action-packed days.
Natural Features and SceneryThe campground occupies shoreline on 15,596-acre Cass Lake, surrounded by mixed forest of red and white pine, spruce, oak, and maple. A sandy beach stretches behind the visitor center. Some sites sit directly on the lake. Bald eagles and otters frequent the area. Star Island, visible from the lake, contains Lake Windigo within it. An island within a lake within an island. Elevation sits at 1,300 feet.
Geological RegionThe Cass Lake region stands as a testament to the raw power of ancient glaciers that sculpted this magnificent landscape. Within the vast Chippewa National Forest, this freshwater wonderland showcases nature's artistry through its remarkable lake system. The crown jewel remains the fascinating Star Island, a rare geological phenomenon where an island contains its own lake—Lake Windigo—creating a mesmerizing island-within-a-lake-within-an-island formation. This diverse ecosystem supports an incredible array of wildlife, from majestic bald eagles soaring overhead to playful otters diving in the shallows, all thriving among the mixed forest of pine, spruce, oak, and maple that has defined this region for centuries.
