South Pike Bay sits on the shore of Cass Lake in Minnesota's Chippewa National Forest, a small seasonal campground operated by the Forest Service. The sites are spacious and wooded, offering tent, RV, and primitive camping options with vault toilets, potable water, and fire rings. Campers fish for walleye and northern pike, swim from sandy beaches, and bike the nearby Migizi Trail during the warm summer months.
South Pike Bay Campground caters to primitive camping and offers non-electric sites that accommodate both tent and RV camping. The campground is known for its privacy and proximity to the lake.
Weather and SeasonsBest season: summer. Summer offers warm, lake-friendly weather and full access to campground services and the boat ramp — expect daytime highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s F and cool nights in the 50s–60s. Water recreation (swimming, boating, and fishing for walleye and northern pike) and the Migizi Bike Trail are at their peak, and sandy beaches are most inviting. This is the busiest time of year, so reservations (open May 23–Sept 1) are recommended for weekends and July–August stays.
Peak months: July, August, June, September
Avoid: October, November, December, January
Elevation1329 ft above sea level
Natural Features and SceneryPike Bay's sandy beaches meet forests of old-growth pines and mixed hardwoods at 1,329 feet elevation. The clear water reflects the surrounding trees, and several sites sit directly on the sand. The forest provides good shade and natural privacy between sites. You'll hear frogs in the evening and wind through the pines. The bay is part of the larger Cass Lake system, carved out by glaciers and lined with sandy deposits that make the shoreline distinct from rockier Minnesota lakes to the north.
