No potable water on-site means hauling everything in on a half-mile carry. Reviewers also flagged that some visitors skip the outhouse entirely, so if sanitation standards matter to you, this first-come free site has no host to enforce the rules.

The elevation is 650 ft. The campground, part of the Hungerford Lake Recreation Area, is located in rolling hills among maple, oak and other hardwoods. Pack it in, pack it out, the campground is primarily a horse camp with limited privacy between camping sites. Each site has a hitching rail and campers are expected to clean up after their horses and dump in the manure bin provided. A large tract of land provides a great experience for both equestrian folks and mountain bikers. Under Forest Service supervision, the campground was built by volunteers. Although there are no picnic tables or grilles, there is a fire pit at each camping site. There is water for stock only. Campers must bring a generator to pump the water out of the well - a rather unusual feature.
Open April 13 through October 30
Water is provided for stock only - see General Comments.
Hungerford Lake is 15 acres and permits motors up to 8hp.
The parking aprons are dirt. The interior road is rutted.
From Big Rapids, MI, take State Rt. 20 west about 8.5 miles to the Norwich Manistee National Forest 224 Town Hall (Cypress Ave.). Turn right (north) onto Cypress Ave. and go 0.5 miles to a cemetery (Hungerford Lake Rd.). Turn right onto Hungerford Lake Rd. (Forest Rt. 5134) and go 1.5 miles to campground on left. NOTE: Forest Rt. 5134 is paved then gravel.

The campground is accessible May 1 through November 30; access roads aren't plowed in winter. Summer delivers the warmest, most reliable conditions. Daytime highs in the low 70s to low 80s°F, nights cooling into the 50s–60s. Fishing and paddling peak during these months, trails stay dry for the half-mile walk in, and long daylight hours stretch campfire time. Spring brings wildflowers and cooler, wetter conditions. Autumn turns the canopy gold and crimson but temperatures drop. Weekdays stay especially quiet thanks to the walk-in requirement.
Summer is 'warmest, most reliable'; reviews praise camping and fishing in warm months.
