Horse campers who want direct trail access and don't need electric or a bathhouse. Fall is the standout season: hardwoods turn, mosquitoes drop off, and the 21-mile trail system through glacial hills is at its best. Sites are spacious and grassy with picket posts already in place
Campers without horses have little reason to book here. The facilities are genuinely primitive, vault toilets only, uneven sites that need leveling gear, and no showers on-site (Sugarloaf Lake Campground is nearby but costs extra). Summer adds heavy mosquitoes to the list.

This quaint rustic campground is located at aproximately 8400 Loveland Road in Chelsea, Michigan, surrounded by a beautiful hardwood forest. It has 25 spacious grassy sites available for campers with horses. Each site has a firepit, picnic table and picket posts. Other amenities include vault toilets and a solar well pump for water. While the campground is rustic, visitors can take showers at the Sugarloaf Lake Campground, just up the road for a small fee. Campsites are reservable except for certain event weekends. The campground connects approximately 21 miles of Waterloo's Equestrian Trails as well as the day use staging area which offers a mounting block and pavillion for gatherings and picnics.

Fall delivers the best trail riding here. September through October brings daytime highs in the 45–65°F range with crisp mornings, and the hardwoods turn color across the hills. Mosquitoes have died off by then. A relief after buggy summer months. Peak color weekends draw moderate crowds. Summer trail riding is hot and buggy; bring repellent for yourself and your horse, especially at dawn and dusk.
