Vault toilets and a hand pump are the full amenity list. Reviewers flag the toilets as sometimes unclean, there's no swim beach at Appleton, and mosquitoes at dawn and dusk are serious enough to matter if bug tolerance is low.

Summer brings the best conditions: highs in the 70s to mid-80s, nights in the 50s and 60s, and warm water for paddling and fishing. The oak canopy keeps tent sites cool, and wildlife is active on the trails. Mosquitoes and ticks are a real issue during warm, wet stretches, especially at dawn and dusk. Pack repellent. Trails turn muddy after rain. Weekend use picks up in summer, but the small site count and wooded layout preserve the quiet.
Oak-hickory forest suggests strong fall color; trails and quiet make fall appealing.
