Best season: winter. Winter offers the most distinct experience here: stable snowpack, open backcountry huts, and quiet, trackable wilderness with daytime highs typically between 15–30°F and nighttime lows often below freezing (roughly -10–15°F). This is peak season for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter hut-to-hut trips, and clear, frosty wildlife viewing; the huts provide sheltered, off-grid overnighting that you can't get other seasons. Visitor numbers are low compared with summer and fall, but plan for a Peak months: January, February, March, October
Huts operate for winter stays only; descriptions note ideal snowpack, temps and groomed cross-country access.
Reservation tips, booking windows, and free cancellation alerts.
Huts, campsites, and lean-tos are dispersed throughout the monument; huts are only open for stays during the winter and require reservations. All roads within the monument are unpaved and some sites can only be reached by hiking, biking, paddling, skiing, or snowshoeing. There are no flush toilets within the monument boundaries; campsites may have vault or pit toilets, and other sites require following Leave No Trace practices for human waste. Most campsites have picnic tables and a stone or metal fire ring. Brown metal food storage lockers (bear boxes) are available in some campsites and all odorous items must be stored in a bear-resistant canister or in a contained vehicle if no locker is available. Reservation fees are non-refundable; reservations may be canceled or modified online up to one day prior to the reservation start date.
