Visitors enjoy 27 miles of historic motor roads, 158 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of carriage roads.
From Boston take I-95 north to Augusta, Maine, then Route 3 east to Ellsworth, and on to Mount Desert Island. For an alternate route, continue on I-95 north to Bangor, Maine, then take I-395 to U.S. Route 1A east to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, take Route 3 to Mount Desert Island.

Fall offers the best combination of crisp, clear weather and spectacular coastal foliage — daytime temperatures commonly range from the mid-40s to mid-60s°F (5–18°C) with chilly nights. Trails and seaside viewpoints are at their most scenic for hiking and biking, and wildlife viewing (migrating birds, seals offshore) is excellent while crowds thin dramatically compared with summer. Note the campground is open through October 12, so plan for early- to mid-October visits to catch peak color and a— Peak months: September, October, August Avoid: November, December, January, February

Schoodic Woods Campground provides a range of amenities designed to enhance the camping experience. The campground is equipped with electric hookups for most sites, with B-Loop sites also offering water hookups. Facilities include flush toilets, potable running water, a dump station, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. The roads are paved, ensuring easy access. However, the campground lacks shower facilities, and portable showers and toilets are prohibited. As stated in the official description, '*** There are no showers in the campground or the surrounding area. The closest showers are located on Mount Desert Island.***' For dishwashing, there are outdoor sinks available at the restroom facilities. 'Restrooms are always clean,' according to numerous reviews, but the absence of showers has been a recurring criticism.
