Go if

Kayakers and small-boat campers who want a self-sufficient shoreline experience in summer. The wildlife viewing is genuine, deer and raccoons are regular visitors, and the tidal creek access is the whole point of coming.

Skip if

Tent campers expecting level ground will fight the uneven sites without a thick sleeping pad. No potable water means hauling in everything you drink, and strong currents at the landings can turn arrival and departure into a real challenge if you haven't checked marine forecasts.

Janes Island State Park is surrounded by Chesapeake Bay waters and features rental cabins, pavilions, campsites and the Daugherty Creek Lodge. More than 30 miles of marked water trails dissect a 2,900 acre Chesapeake Bay salt marsh island. Limitless vistas over shallow bays, marshes and low vegetation impart a sense of space and solitude. Most of the waterways are protected from wind and current. Anglers enjoy easy access to the Bay and fish for striped bass, spot, croaker, flounder and bluefish. Crabbing is a family favorite at Janes Island. The park offers beaches, biking trails, boat ramp, boat rentals, cabins, camp store, canoeing/kayaking, crabbing, dump station, electric hookups, fishing, hiking/walking trails, interpretive center, marina, mini cabins, observation tower, pet loops, picnic shelters, picnic tables, primitive camping, RV sites, rent bicycles, restrooms, showers, snacks, swimming, trailer storage, waterfowl hunting, wheelchair accessible, and youth group camping. All campsites except #48-51 operate March 27, 2026-November 28, 2026; campsites #48-51 are year-round. Mini cabins operate March 27, 2026-November 28, 2026.
