Go if

Fall weekends draw crowds to the summit, but mid-week tent campers who pack warm layers for 30s nights get the foliage and clear panoramas with far less company. At $8-$20 a night with fire rings and bear lockers already on-site, the value is hard to beat.

Skip if

No cell service and a mandatory hike-in with full gear will frustrate anyone expecting a drive-up setup. Trails around some sites run narrow and overgrown, and alcohol is prohibited throughout the reservation.
