Best Time to Camp at Calpine Lookout

Summer unveils Calpine Lookout's most accessible face, welcoming visitors who can drive right to the base before ascending to their sky-high accommodations. But winter transforms this mountain refuge into a true backcountry adventure, where snowshoes, skis, or snowmobiles become your keys to reaching this frozen fortress. Bundle up when the mercury plummets—temperatures have been known to plunge to a bone-chilling -21°F, turning the lookout into a cozy haven against the Sierra's fierce winter personality.
