McBride Springs Campground, Mt. Shasta, CA
Hikers and climbers who want a quiet, cheap base close to Mt. Shasta trailheads. Site 7 has mountain views, site 6 draws praise for privacy, and the whole place is 10 minutes from town if you forget supplies. Fall is the sweet spot.
Vault toilets have drawn real complaints about maintenance, including flies and overflow, so if that's a dealbreaker, plan accordingly. Also: no potable water, no hookups, and a 16-foot trailer limit rules out most RVs. First-come fills fast, even midweek.

Description: Situated on the lower slopes of Mt. Shasta at an elevation of 5000 feet, this popular campground has 12 sites with tables and fire rings, suitable for tents and small RV's. Vault toilets. 7 day limit. $10 per night. No reservations. Usually opens by Memorial Day weekend and closes near the end of October. Conveniently located on Mt. Shasta and only a few minutes from I-5, services and supplies. A miniature spring-fed seasonal creek flows through the campground, and a hand operated pump provides well water. Special note: In 2009 a root disease was discovered in the campground that affected all of the white fir trees, killing some and infecting others. These hazardous trees were removed in early 2011 to allow the campground to be reopened for use. A major effort by the Forest Service to clean up the debris and replant non-affected native species in the campground occurred throughout the spring of 2012. Although the area has been temporarily impacted, in time nature will restore this popular campground to pristine conditions.

Summer brings the most reliable access and daytime highs between 60 and 80°F, with nighttime lows dropping into the mid-30s to 50s. The springs keep the area green even in dry months. Afternoon thunderstorms occur occasionally, and late-season snow can dust higher elevations. Winter closes or limits access. Pack layers: warm afternoons give way to cold nights quickly at this elevation.
Fall visits noted as quieter with more availability and pleasant conditions before closure.
