Sims Flat Campground sits along the Sacramento River at 1,600 feet elevation in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The 19 sites accommodate tents and mid-sized RVs (average 16-foot trailer max) for $15 per night. A CCC-built suspension bridge from the 1930s still crosses the river, and interpretive signs explain the camp's conservation history. Train horns from the nearby tracks are loud and frequent at night.
Sims Flat Campground offers opportunities for tent camping and mid-sized RVs/trailers. Group camping, cabin lodging, and glamping are not supported.
The campground occupies land once used as a winter route by Native American traders. Sims Trading Post was established here to serve early settlers and gold seekers. The steel suspension bridge was built by Civilian Conservation Corps workers from Camp 978 in the 1930s. Interpretive signs throughout the campground explain this history. Weather and SeasonsSummer brings the most reliable conditions for river recreation. Daytime highs reach the mid-70s to high-80s°F, with nights dropping into the 50s–60s°F. The river is warmest and most approachable for swimming, fishing, and paddling during these months. Weekends see moderate crowds. Midweek visits offer better availability. Winter turns the area into snow-dusted terrain, though access and conditions vary.
ElevationPerched at an ideal 1,600 feet above sea level, Sims Flat strikes the perfect balance between mountain majesty and river valley comfort. This sweet-spot elevation gifts visitors with sweeping scenic vistas while maintaining a temperate climate that extends the camping season and keeps extreme weather at bay.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Sacramento River flows directly alongside the campground, creating fishing and swimming access within steps of most sites. Conifers and deciduous trees provide canopy cover that varies by site. Spring and summer bring wild sweet peas in bloom, and moss-covered remnants of the original CCC Camp 978 structures are scattered through the forest floor. The elevation keeps temperatures cooler than the valley below, especially at night.
