No potable water on-site is a hard stop if you're not prepared to haul it in. Larger trailers will fight the tight sites and 5-mile gravel approach, and train noise carries across the meadow at night.

Shafter is a tranquil campground next to lush meadows containing wildflowers found early in the season. The S.P. railroad tracks go right past the campground, occasionally campers can enjoy the trains as they go by. Butte Creek is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout and offers good fishing early in the season.

The elevation is 4,300 ft. The campground, pretty and secluded, stretches out along the Willow-lined Butte Creek to a large wildflower and sage-dotted meadow. Juniper and Ponderosa pine provide shade while grass and pine needles cover the ground. Privacy between campsites is good. The snowcapped tip of Mt. Klamath National Forest 87 Shasta can be seen from a few campsites. While most sites have no grilles, many do have the old Klamath Oven. A lantern post is also found on each campsite. There may be some noise from an occasional passing train. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
Open weekend before Memorial Day through October 15

Summer delivers the warmest weather and best access to the creek and trails. Daytime highs run 70s to low 80s°F, nights cool into the 40s-50s°F. This is prime time for fishing, wildlife viewing at dawn and dusk, and catching wildflowers before they fade. July and August weekends see the most visitors, so weekdays offer more solitude. Early season means better creek flows. Frost paints the meadows outside summer months, with temperatures dropping below freezing.
Spring and early summer recommended for fishing and peak wildflowers per reviews.
Shafter Campground offers basic amenities tailored to campers seeking a rustic experience. Restrooms are available, described as clean by user reviews, specifically noted as 'very clean SST' (vault toilets). However, there is no potable water available on-site, as confirmed by authoritative sources and echoed by user reviews. Picnic tables are provided at all 10 campsites, along with fire rings for campfires—though only 2 sites have grills (referred to as 'old Klamath Oven'). Additionally, lantern posts are available at each campsite. User reviews commend the cleanliness of the pit toilets and the overall upkeep of the campground.
