High-clearance or 4WD rigs looking for free, no-frills dispersed camping in genuine desert badlands. Spring is the sweet spot: temps in the 50s-70s, occasional wildflowers, and almost no crowds.
No restrooms, no water, no signs marking the campground boundaries, and dirt bike noise is a real presence. Tent campers expecting any infrastructure will be disappointed.

Spring brings the most comfortable conditions, with daytime highs between 50 and 70°F and nights in the 30s to 40s. Seasonal wildflowers add color to the badlands, and trail conditions are usually good. Crowds stay low. Summer days get warm, though evenings cool down. Winter can bring snow dustings across the rock formations. Fall also offers mild temperatures for exploring the canyon country.
Described as best season: 50–70°F days, nights 30s–40s and spring wildflowers.
The campground is currently closed as of March 1, 2023, through February 28, 2025, due to a forest closure order for public safety. Amenities at the site include some fire pits and tables, as described by user reviews, but there are no restroom or running water facilities. Kevin Ellis, a user, mentioned, 'You need a high clearance vehicle to get here or 4x4 pretty cool campground... some fire pits and tables no bathroom no running water nice scenery.' The sandy access road may require a 4-wheel-drive vehicle.
