No potable water on-site is a hard stop for anyone not prepared to haul every drop. Outside hunting season, the Avenales Ranch gate stays closed, so most hikers and casual campers can't reach it at all.

Late summer. August through September. Offers the most reliable conditions. Daytime highs reach 75–85°F, and nights cool to 50–60°F. Trails and backcountry routes are dry and open during this window, making it the best time for horseback riding, day hikes, and campfire evenings. Crowds stay low to moderate because of the campground's remote, seasonal nature. Spring runoff and mud complicate access earlier in the year.
Open August–September; most reliable conditions with 75–85°F days and dry trails.
