Carry-in water requirements and a stiff 3-mile climb will already thin the field, but the real frustration is arriving to find your reserved site occupied by squatters with no ranger around to sort it out. Tent campers also struggle to find flat ground.
Compare with similar sites, watch availability, and build a packing list — Camp Sage handles all of it.
Fall delivers the clearest coastal visibility and milder temperatures in the mid-60s to low-70s. Crowds thin after summer weekends. Marine layer burns off more predictably, improving sunset and stargazing conditions from the ridge. Late summer into early fall brings Santa Ana winds and elevated fire risk. Summer mornings often start with fog that clears by midday. Cellular service is limited year-round.

Deer Canyon Campground offers a primitive camping experience requiring a strenuous three-mile uphill hike to access the campsites. Campers must pack in all supplies, including water, and pack out all trash. No drinking water is available, and there are no trash cans on site. The campground provides picnic tables and pit toilets but lacks showers, flush toilets, potable water, fire rings, or trash facilities. Fires are restricted to backpack stoves only. Cellular service at the site is limited, and vehicles must be left in the parking lot.
