Blackhawk Campground sits at 3,435 feet in Dead Horse Ranch State Park along the Verde River, just outside Cottonwood in northern Arizona's Verde Valley. The park maintains 123 tent sites across its Blackhawk Loop, a tent-only area where generators are prohibited. Rates run $25–50 per night, and the campground often sells out during spring and fall, so reserve early.
Blackhawk Loop consists of 17 non-electric campsites reserved exclusively for tents; RVs (including campers and vans) are not permitted in this loop.
Weather and SeasonsFall brings the best combination of comfortable daytime temperatures (typically 65–85°F in October–November) and cool nights (40–55°F), and the cottonwoods along the Verde River put on a vivid gold show that makes hikes and bike rides especially scenic. River levels and temperatures are pleasant for fishing and wildlife viewing, and crowds are busier on weekends but still manageable if you reserve in advance. Because gates close at sundown, plan errands before nightfall during shorter days.
Natural Features and SceneryThe Verde River runs through the park, bordered by cottonwoods and willows that turn gold in fall. The river supports fishing for trout and draws herons and a long list of bird species to lagoons and wetlands nearby. Beyond the riparian corridor, mesquite groves and high desert vegetation stretch across the valley floor. Sedona's red rock country sits a short drive north, but trails and bike paths within the park connect campsites to wildlife viewing spots along the Verde River Greenway without leaving the property.
