Best season: fall. Fall offers the best balance of mild days, dramatic mountain color, and low crowds — daytime highs typically sit in the 60s–70s°F with nights falling into the 30s–40s, making for comfortable hiking and crisp campfires. Trails and overlooks around Yeager Canyon and Woodchute are at their most photogenic in late September–October, wildlife is active, and bugs are reduced. Weekdays are pleasantly quiet compared with summer weekends, though be aware of the local hunting seasons and plan accordingly. Peak months: October, September, May, June Avoid: November, December, January, February
Fall called the 'sweet spot' with ideal hiking temps and fewer crowds — prime seasonality.

Potato Patch Campground provides a variety of amenities in a serene natural setting. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, paved parking, a level tent pad (non-electric sites only), and an elevated fire ring with a grill. Accessible sites have additional pedestal grills. Loop B exclusively offers 12 sites with 30-amp electrical hookups, but tents are not allowed in this loop. The campground has three composting toilets, which are frequently noted for being clean and mostly odorless. 'The bathrooms were top-notch, no flies or bugs, and very clean,' remarked a visitor. Garbage service and potable water (not for filling RV tanks) are available. However, reviewers have noted that the potable water tap can sometimes be locked ('no water on the campground, faucet is locked'). Trash cans and signs are present to enforce bear safety, though some reviewers noted that the dumpsters were occasionally left open, potentially attracting wildlife.
