Best season: summer. Summer offers the most reliable access, mildest weather, and the longest daylight—ideal for fishing, boating, and multi-hour hikes. Expect daytime highs roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) with cool nights around 40–50°F (4–10°C) and frequent calm, clear mornings ideal for floatplane arrivals and glassy water fishing. Salmon runs, abundant wildlife viewing (bears, eagles), and near-constant daylight mean the best overall activity variety, though you should expect more visitors than in shoulder seasons due Peak months: July, August, June, May Avoid: January, February, March, April
Peak season May–Sep; calm mornings for floatplane access, good fishing and pleasant temps (50–65°F).

The Virginia Lake Cabin in Tongass National Forest offers a mix of rustic and functional amenities. The cabin is equipped with three single bunks, two double bunks with trundles, a table and benches, broom, wood stove, oil stove (requiring No. 1 stove oil), and a campfire ring. It features a wheelchair-friendly deck wrapping around two sides and a walkway connecting it to the outhouse, although accessibility depends on the seasonal floatplane dock being installed. Visitors must bring sleeping pads, cookware, water, firewood, and other essentials such as flashlights and garbage bags. Water is available from a stream behind the cabin but must be treated before use. Cooking facilities are not provided, and trash must be packed out. User reviews highlighted the cabin's functional condition but noted issues such as the floor needing refinishing and the skiff requiring repairs.
