The North Platte River is the only floatable waterway in central Wyoming and has become the destination fishery for the state. Scenic and recreational values of the North Platte River are derived from a combination of environmental factors and management practices. The river is highly valued as a class 1 fishery. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has rated it as a blue ribbon fishery. Game fish species include rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. The most common recreation activities are fishing, floating, waterfowl hunting, and observing wildlife. There are also opportunities for picnicking and camping. This river has become a vital part of the social and economic values of central Wyoming.

Best season: spring. Spring offers the best combination of mild weather, active river flows and abundant wildlife — ideal for fishing, boating and bird/wildlife viewing. Expect daytime highs roughly 50–70°F (cool nights 30–40°F) in May–June as snowmelt runs the North Platte at good levels for trout and small craft. Wildflowers and greening prairie make the scenery dramatic, though weekends and holiday periods can be busy, so plan weekdays for more solitude. Peak months: May, June, September Avoid: December, January, February
Spring described as prime: snowmelt boosts river flow, peak visitation and fishing.
Pete's Draw Campground offers a variety of basic amenities including a parking area, vault toilets, seven overnight campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, shelters, tent pads, RV parking, and trash receptacles. A hardened pedestrian trail is also on-site. However, there is no potable water available at the campground. The campground is first-come, first-served, and does not allow overnight parking in the day-use area. Heavy visitation is noted during the spring and early summer months.
